Mickey homestay is the pleasant and well-appointed home stay of Murali and Sujatha, Murali is the grand son of Mr. Appu, who was the first boat driver of Periyar Lake. Mickey homestay is situated very near to the main Street of Kumily, the gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve and Thekkady.

Wildlife Tours

The fauna within the forest of Periyar Tiger Reserve is rich and varied. There are over 60 species of mammals, many of which are on the endangered list like Tiger, Nilgiri tahr, Mouse deer, Small Travencore flying squirrel, brown plam civet and the majestic Asiatic Elephant. Besides these you will also find sloth bear, leopard and wild dogs. The gaur (bison) among the herbivorous species and found in large numbers.

Some 266 species of birds are found at Periyar, of which a third are winter migrants. Several species are endemic to the Western ghat region like the winged parakeet, Wynad laughing thrush, Rufous babbler, Black and orange flycatcher, Malabar Grey hornbill, Nilgiri wood pigeon, Crimson-backed sunbird and Nilgiri house swallow. Others include darters, cormorants, ibises, gray herons, mynas, flycatchers, orioles, kingfishers, kites, ospreys and thrushes. The endangered great Indian hornbill has a sizable population in Periyar.

Some major reptiles of the 43 species in the park are monitor lizards, pythons, king cobras, fresh water tortoises and flying lizards. There are several other poisonous and non poisonous species of snakes in the park. Over 16 species of amphibians have been recorded included the Malabar tree frog…

Tiger Trail: This programme which involves camping out in the midst of the Periyar Tiger Reserve has been hailed as one of the pioneering wildlife programmes in India. The local tribals & trackers take you on a journey of adventure & wildlife safari. The programme extends from 2 to 4 days.

Wildlife safaris to Gavi. The forests at Gavi are among the best of India’s wilderness, stradding the beauty of the Periyar Tiger Reserve – a quiet and beautiful unspoilt forest haven. This evergreen forest abounds in wildlife-elephants, bison, Lion Tailed macaques, Nilgiri Langurs, tigers & wild dogs. The programme includes stay at the local forest lodge Green Mansion, Jeep safaris, trekking, boating & plantation visits. The local trackers who live in the cardamom plantation are knowledgeable about the evergreen forests & wildlife.

Bamboo Rafting: This is a dawn to dusk range hiking and rafting program through some of the richest forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve. Staring at 8 am from the boat landing, a mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into rafts made of bamboos. The forests are rich in bird life and arboreal animals like giant squirrel and Nilgiri langur. The rafting is for about three hours and one gets a panoramic view of forest-clad hill reflected on the lake. Animals like elephant, gaur and sambar are sighted keeping close to the edges of the lake. The team hikes back to the boat landing by 5 pm. An armed guard and 4 guides will accompany a maximum of 10 tourists. Tea, snacks and packed lunch will be served en route.
